About This Book

Throughout the book, I’ve tried to give you basic instructions that can help you collage anything, but I’m aware that new art forms can be intimidating when you first start out on them. That’s why I’ve included step-by-step instructions for some of the specific collages I show in this book, so that you can take your time and follow my steps before creating art of your own.

Collage Basics

There is no right way to make a piece of art. What matters is that it gets translated through you. So no matter how you create your collage, or what materials you use, you’re doing it right because you’re creating and growing as you explore with this medium. In this section, we’ll cover the materials and techniques of how I create a piece of collage art, and how to incorporate them into your work.

Collage Themes

As always, what you create with your scissors and paper is up to you, but I find that art is most effective when it comes from your life and represents a bit of yourself and what you are passionate about. In this section, I’ll teach you the basics of the objects I like to collage—nature, scenes about town, and more— so that you can use them to cut and build your own artwork at home. Ready? Let’s see what we can cut!

Lettering and Patterns

Lettering artwork and patterns is a perfect way to personalize a collage or other gift. In the following pages, I created a series of floral wildflower-themed letters. Do these look tricky? I promise you they’re super easy.

Landscapes and Building A Scene

In this next section we are going to look at the basic principles of composition and how we can create artworks that help lead our eyes around a page and make a focal point. We are also going to put our training into practice and look at a few different scenes and landscapes, like a seaside, mountain, and park, that often inspire my artwork and will hopefully serve as a jumping-off point for creating your own.

Creating Artwork from Photos

This next section will show some examples of how you could approach this kind of collage. Why not go through some of the photos you’ve taken and create a picture out of them? It doesn’t even have to be an artwork of one photo; it could be a lot of different photos taken from one experience that culminate in a single collage. These collages are just my artistic interpretation of my personal experiences. Now it’s your turn to have a go at your own. Happy snipping!
